Arnheim: Custom Content Installation

Arnheim is presently realized through Neverwinter Nights as an online multiplayer game. The instructions below are for installation of custom content in your Neverwinter Nights directory. If you need to acquire NWN, please see the link above for instructions.
To play you will need a variety of custom content, including haks, overrides, tlks, and a modified dialog.tlk. To simplify the install of this content, I have created these instructions. If you have any questions about this send them to The Magus. Comments on this document are welcome.

Step One – Download the Custom Content

Arnheim Core Content: (http://bit.ly/GSCqhJ)

note: All core content was upgraded to V2 on Oct 9, 2012

  1. Arnheim HAKs
  2. Arnheim TLK
  3. Arnheim Overrides
  4. Arnheim Dialog
  5. Arnheim Tilesets (For a list of tilesets in this archive see the Appendix of this document)

Additional Packages (Required)

  1. Project Q v1.5 Haks

Arnheim Optional Content: (http://bit.ly/Hbpxv1)

  1. Arnheim Music
  2. Arnheim Portraits

Step Two – Backing Up

A. Backup your override directory as follows:

  1. Navigate to the directory in which you have placed the Neverwinter Nights application. On my drive this is named NWN.
  2. Select the directory named override
  3. Rename this directory to Override_Bak

B. Backup your dialog.tlk file as follows:

  1. Navigate to the directory in which you have placed the Neverwinter Nights application. On my drive this is named NWN.
  2. Select the file named dialog.tlk
  3. Rename this file to dialog_bak.tlk

Step Three – Installation

  1. Extract the various archives to your desktop
  2. If your NWN plays in the English language place the dialog.tlk file in your Neverwinter Nights directory, and if necessary, approve the prompt to overwrite the existing file. The name of this directory on my computer is NWN. - IMPORTANT: If you DO NOT have an English version of NWN, contact The Magus
  3. Files from the override download go in Neverwinter Nights’ override directory. If you do not have an override directory, make one named “override”.
  4. Files from the optional portraits download go in Neverwinter Nights’ portraits directory.
  5. Files from the optional music download go in Neverwinter Nights’ music directory.
  6. Move the remaining files by file type into their respective directories. Approve all overwrites. 1. tlk files go in Neverwinter Nights’ tlk directory
  7. hak files go in Neverwinter Nights’ hak directory

NOTES

It is unconventional to include a dialog.tlk file and override files with a module’s custom content. In this case it is necessary because these files enable Arnheim character creation in multiplayer games. Without these files, creation of Arnheim characters will be confusing, and it is very unlikely that they would have the custom feats, and abilities that are part of the setting.

The dialog.tlk file will not change default Neverwinter Nights behavior for the English version. Once it is installed there is little reason to remove it. Other modules including those that use the Community Patch v 1.70 will work the same with this modified dialog file.

Use of the override will change the behavior of other modules. After you’ve finished making characters for Arnheim, “switch off” this override directory. The best way to do this is to simply rename this override directory to override_arnheim when you don’t need it.
